One in five U.S. adults reported using tobacco products in 2019, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday, 80% of them using combustible products, such as cigarettes, the federal health agency said in a press release.



Analyzing data from the 2019 National Health Interview Survey, the CDC measured the use of cigarettes, cigars (cigars, cigarillos or filtered little cigars), pipes (regular pipes, water pipes or hookahs), e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (chewing tobacco, snuff, dip, snus, or dissolvable tobacco), the CDC said.



The results showed that despite all the health risks, America is still huffing and puffing away.



There are more than 34 million adult smokers in the U.S., The Associated Press noted. And 4.5% of adults, or 11 million people, over age 18 use e-cigarettes, most of them age 18 to 24. In all, the CDC said, an estimated 50.6 million U.S. adults used a tobacco product in 2019.



“The battle against tobacco use in this country is far from over,” said CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield in the statement. “Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States.”



Cigarettes and other “combustible” products currently cause the most tobacco-related death and disease in the U.S., the CDC said, noting that “no form of tobacco product use is risk-free.”
